Welcome: Urbanization and Development

This module seeks to introduce students to the field of urbanization and development as an area of concern for managing our environment.  This will be done by means of   examining the patterns, processes and implications of urbanization in a developing context, with particular reference to the current challenges faced by urban planners in tackling issues of survival and well-being of low-income groups, and the variability of urban life and poverty in different geographical contexts. These are pertinent issues in a move to address urban environmental problems.

Lecture One

This lecture introduces students to the concept of urbanization and the impacts arise as a result of the migration of people to urban areas. It will thus be highlighted that the best way to deal with issues of urbanization is to broaden our conceptualization of this concept. We will also critically investigate the current dominant discourse of urbanization and its implication at management level. While the lecture will present the slides on the nature of urbanization, students are thus encouraged to think critically about the way this concepts is presented to us.
